About Grandfather Mountain

Protecting the Environment

Welcome to a Globally Recognized Nature Preserve

Grandfather Mountain, elevation 5,964 feet, has been a wildlife sanctuary and nature preserve for decades.

The management of the Mountain seeks to steward the property in a way that protects the natural wonder of the geographic landmark AND offers the general public access to its fantastic scenery.

Grandfather Mountain is privately owned and receives no government assistance for the care-taking of its resources. In order to accomplish all that it does, the Mountain fosters partnerships with other successful land managers that help facilitate sharing of knowledge and inspiration.

Grandfather's stewardship partners include:

  • The Nature Conservancy
  • United Nations Man & Biosphere Program
  • N.C. Natural Heritage Program
  • National Park Service
  • U.S. Forest Service
  • N.C. Wildlife Commission
  • U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
  • several universities

Guests to the attraction can rest assured that Grandfather Mountain is diligently working to preserve its valuable resources while searching for new ways to interpret its wonders for the public.

"LOVED IT!!! When we arrived at the parking area, I told my wife, "look at those crazy people up on that rock." Then wouldn't you know it in about 15 minutes I was inducted in to that club. WOW what a VIEW. As close to heaven as we can get till we get there! The kids loved it (5 and 9). "
