FRASURE ENDS OVERFELT’S WINNING STREAK AS HE BECOMES SCOTTISH ATHLETE OF HIGHLAND GAMES

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, NC –- Kerry Overfelt of Bardstown, KY struggled to win Scottish Athlete of the Highland Games for the fourth year in a row, but was not successful in his attempt. The shining star was Eric Frasure, a 23-year-old from Greenville, NC.

The 53rd annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games proved to be the year for Frasure to illustrate his talent and ability as he set three world field records. Frasure set high standards in the 28 pound weight throw which soared 87’ 3.5”, the 22 pound hammer throw which flew 118’ 7.5” and the 20 pound sheaf throw at 31’ 3”.

“I have been coming to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games for 11 years, nine of those competing in heavy athletics,” said Fraser. “This is the biggest games, I have not missed it and I don’t intend to.”

The day also proved to be successful for 25-year-old Avery County, NC native Joe Welliver. This year was Welliver’s first full season participating in all amateur heavyweight competitions at the Highland Games. He had four first place finishes in distance, the sheath toss, the hammer throw and the 28 pound weight throw.

“I couldn’t have done this without the support of Avery County and of my loving wife, Amanda Van Pelt Welliver,” said Welliver. “I enjoyed it and I intend to participate from now on.”

The professional and amateur athletes participate in seven competitions including the stone throw, the 56 pound throw, the 28 pound throw, the hammer throw, the caber toss, the sheaf toss and the 56 pound toss.
